I tell a story. It's true. When I was in my last hospital program, there was a Hispanic woman who was Spanish only. No one spoke Spanish except for her husband. He would come weekly. I never heard her answer as she was also semi-vegetative. My speaking was a rarity.
This woman had developed the habit of wrapping a foot on the leg of her wheelchair. She had been doing it so long that her foot became set in that way. It only wanted to hook her wheelchair.
One day the hospital physical therapist came by. She was looking for people for a new program that teaches walking. She had the Hispanic woman in mind. The PT knelt down to examine the woman's foot.
No, the PT decided against including the woman. Her foot wasn't for standing anymore.
This illustrates the importance of keeping a natural, average looking posture.
Caregivers, please watch for posture. If you need to, talk to the person's doctor about a brace. There are day and night ones for positioning problems.
